Rare 4.3 quake in Appalachian coal region Saturday
The US Geological Survey reports a light 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattled southeastern Kentucky on Saturday shortly after noon (EST).
The quake was at a shallow depth of 1.1 kilometre (0.7 miles) in the Appalachian Mountains near the Virginia border.
The centre of the quake was 13km from the town of Whitesburg according to the agency.
A tremor of 2.5 magnitude followed 90 minutes later near Hazard Kentucky.
